Law & Artificial Intelligence
The doctoral scholarship issued by the LexUM Chair on Legal Information and the Cyberjustice Laboratory is intended to encourage two (2) doctoral students to pursue their thesis on the theme of law and artificial intelligence. The goal is to allow young researchers to participate in the remarkable dynamic that has, for several years now, been driving the Montreal metropolis in the field of artificial intelligence research. By joining the Université de Montréal’s Law Faculty, the young researchers will have access to the world renowned Institut de valorisation des données (IVADO), which unites HEC Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and the Université de Montréal, as well as to the pioneering work in Deep Learning pursued by the Montreal Institute of Learning Algorithms (MILA) located at Université de Montréal.
Although managing the effects of these innovations at the economic, social and political levels will undoubtedly be among the major projects in the coming years, the scope of their practical implications in the field of law remains largely unexplored. It is for this reason that both the LexUM Chair on Legal Information and the Cyberjustice Laboratory of the Université de Montréal have decided to award a doctoral scholarship to encourage the new generation of researchers to partake in the many challenges posed by the law’s understanding of algorithms.
Within the LexUM Chair on Legal Information and the Cyberjustice Laboratory, the recipients of the scholarship will find a multidisciplinary collaborative environment conducive to mentoring and cutting-edge research on legal issues related to information technology and artificial intelligence.

Annual value: 25 000$ (renewable once)

Fellows must begin their doctoral program no later than Fall 2024 (start date September 2024)!
We therefore strongly encourage you to submit your scholarship application as soon as possible!
Method of payment: The scholarship will be paid in two installments to the tuition fees department: the first installment will be paid during the term of admission and the second installment will be paid according to the specifics issued in the grant letter.
The LexUM Chair and the Cyberjustice Laboratory reserve the right not to grant a scholarship in 2024, depending on the applications received.
Eligibility requirements:
- Admission to the doctoral program of Université de Montréal’s Law Faculty;
- Thesis related to the field of law and artificial intelligence.
Award criteria:
- High level academic record;
- Quality and seriousness of the candidate;
- Demonstration of a strong interest in the issues related to the interaction between law and information and communication technologies.
Application:
- A letter of intent written to the attention of the Committee of the present scholarship and adapted to the selection criteria of the scholarship;
- A brief description of your research project;
- A research and writing schedule;
- A reference letter from a Professor;
- A curriculum vitae;
- Copies of your transcripts (unofficial copies accepted) of your undergraduate and/or graduate degrees, depending on your level of education;
- Any other document or information you consider relevant (statement of financial need, letter of recommendation, etc.).
