Cyberjustice Europe 2025:

Virtual and Augmented Reality in Justice: What About and What For

The third edition of the Cyberjustice Europe Conference, organised by the Robert Badinter Institute in partnership with Université de Montréal’s Cyberjustice Laboratory, the LexUM Chair on Legal Information and the Council of Europe European Commission for the efficiency of justice (CEPEJ), examines the impact of immersive worlds on judicial activities. A day of forward-looking reflection, alternating between plenary round tables and research workshops in parallel, to be held simultaneously in French and English.

Less widely publicised than artificial intelligence, immersive worlds generated by virtual or augmented reality processes seemed, until recently, to be condemned to remain on the fringes of our digital uses. But as their cost falls and their performance increases, new, often highly targeted, uses are emerging, raising questions about the impact of these techniques on the activities that use them.

Immersion in virtual or augmented universes has the potential to transform many human activities by altering our perception of reality, creating new interactions between the physical and digital worlds, and even giving rise to new ways of interacting with ourselves and the world. The justice system is no exception to this trend, which is already seeing some uses for immersive environments in:

  • The preparation, protection or support given to victims or witnesses called to appear in court;
  • The production of reconstructions and simulations as evidence in order to bring out the judicial truth;
  • The development of remote dematerialised hearings based on natively digital elements;
  • The strengthening of reparation or rehabilitation processes in criminal matters.

The experiments and work carried out by international experts —researchers, practitioners and decision-makers —brought together for the occasion will be presented and questioned in front of a large audience where, at each edition of the Cyberjustice Europe Conference, actors from the legal systems of many countries meet.
